Grand Canyon Rattlesnake

Crotalus oreganus abyssus;  A venomous pit viper subspecies found only in the United States in Arizona, this is a medium to large rattlesnake measuring 16-54 inches in length, with dark blotches on a variety of base colors ranging from reddish, pink, yellow/green, light tan, to grey. It feeds on rats, squirrels, mice, lizards, and birds. It uses venom injected through long, hollow, retractable fangs to kill and begin digesting its prey. This rattlesnake is capable of delivering large amounts of potent venom. If encountered it should be left alone.

Exposure: 1/15 sec;   f/5.0;   ISO 400;  70mm; Pentax K5 with Sigma 70mm f2.8 DG Macro.

I don’t really like this snake that much. Its head is very large and wedge shaped in comparison to the other vipers at the zoo, and its coloration, while an incredible natural camouflage, isn’t very pretty to look at. But that’s just my opinion.
