Speckled Rattlesnake

Crotalus mitchellii; A large rattlesnake (up to 1,295 mm or 51″ in total length excluding rattle) with extremely variable coloration. Specimens from the majority of its range in Arizona are rusty tan or dull pinkish-brown. Northwestern Arizona specimens are often pink or peach. Some specimens from the east-central part of its range in Arizona are off-white, pale gray, or pale blue-gray. The Speckled Rattlesnake ranges from southern Nevada to the Cape region of Baja California Sur, and east to central Arizona and extreme northern Sonora, Mexico. There have been no proposed conservation plans. Because of widespread negative attitudes towards snakes, very few conservation programs, worldwide, have been created. A much higher percentage of snakes are threatened with extinction than is currently recognized. Therefore, snakes are particularly susceptible to being overlooked by conservation-minded biologists.

Exposure: 1/15 sec;   f/5.0;   ISO 400;  70mm; Pentax K5 with Sigma 70mm f2.8 DG Macro.

Same shooting problems as the last post; very little light, no flash, handheld with a slow shutter speed. It certainly helps to get to the zoo before it opens so I don’t have crowds jostling me as I try to shoot. I’ve seen this guy on some of my South Mountain hikes before, but usually with the blue/grey coloration. Even with the zoom lens I used to have I never tried getting close enough to notice that they have blue eyes.
